In the witty and heartbreaking graphic autobiography, Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi uses a childlike tone to address an internal struggle within a mind in identity crisis. Marjane’s childlike point of view cannot comprehend God’s role in the domestic turmoil of her country. Marjane was â€Å"born with religion†(6) and treats her relationship with God as if it was a friendship. Growing up in Iran makes it hard for Marjane to express herself and really identify herself. This affects her friendships with children her age. Marjane is very sympathetic for a child her age, and she deeply understands what her country and family has been suffering through. She sat in a bathtub for hours trying to understand how her grandfather felt. Other children her age were not doing things like this. She often talks to God as mentioned before and this is when Marjane can express herself. She cannot do that with other children so she leans on God and identifies with him. As Marjane grows she meets her uncle who be ¬comes the light of her life and her new best friend. He tells her stories about his struggles and Marjane begins to identify herself in his stories. Pascal Laugiers Martyrs Film Review Essay Example

Pascal Laugiers Martyrs: Film Review Paper Just, let yourself go. Give in. In Martyrs, Pascal Laugier integrates science and thriller to make the audience grimis in terror through taboo experimentation and scattered scenes until the final conclusion at the end of the film. Laugier opens the film with a young girl screaming as she runs through an abandoned street, beaten and bloody. He continues to switch scenes to the screaming girl, Lucie, 15 years later, as a woman who suffers hallucinations of a woman who tortures and abuses her. She is visited by this hallucination after she massacres a family whom she believes to be the people who tortured her as a young girl, hence, the opening scene. The transition between scenes and topics are scattered through out the film until the very end, when they all tie together and come with the final conclusion as to why she, and many others, had been tortured. EDIT During the first half of the film, Laugier makes the scenes quick and sudden during the massacre of the family and when Lucie hallucinates. The lights are very bright and character movement is erratic. (? ) The central characters in the film are Lucie (Mylene Jampanoi) and Anna (Morjana Alaoui). Martyrs starts off with a young Lucie, screaming as she runs through an abandoned street, beaten and bloody from over a year of torture at a warehouse. Laugier then switches to Lucie making a friend, Anna, at an orphanage where Lucie begins to show signs of posttraumatic stress; such as, seeing hallucinations. The hallucination Lucie sees is of a woman whom she saw as a child during her torture. She must have been so guilt ridden that she began to hallucinate her as she got older. I believe that Laugier made this a point to show that posttraumatic stress can truly take over a person’s life. When she massacred the people, as well as their children, who tortured her as a child, she did this so the woman would no longer hurt her. Lucie thought she would go away because she avenged her. She didn’t. When I had realized the hallucination wouldn’t leave her once she â€Å"avenged† her death, I believe that Lucie would never truly get over the fact that she had left the woman for death. That is why I feel that the hallucination wouldn’t leave until the hallucination (Lucie) killed her. When Anna found out Lucie has killed this family to make her hallucination go away, she no longer believed that she was tortured. I believe she felt that she was mentally ill and made the whole thing up. It turns out that once Lucie killed herself and Anna had to clean up Lucie’s â€Å"mess†, she found a secret passage in the house that led to a basement that contained a woman who was held captive. This scene will keep you on the edge of your seat because its very graphic and extremely hard to watch as Anna sets the woman free, only to find that she has hallucinations that cockroaches are crawling all over her. When Anna can no longer calm the woman down, she is suddenly shot in the head. This is where Laugier introduces the people who are in charge of the experimentations. Soon, Anna finds herself to be the third victim of torture to find the secrets of the â€Å"after-life†. The film does not hold back on the disturbing visuals. In the end, Anna is skinned alive and eventually reaches â€Å"martyrdom† which is what the crazed-torturers where aiming for. Anna is believed to have seen the other world, the after-life, and shares this with the woman who is in charge of the whole operation. When the woman is supposed to share this with the â€Å"others†, she tells them to â€Å"keep wondering (? look at film again)† and, in turn, shoots herself in the head. The conclusion to the film can either make you feel unsatisfied with the ending or make you keep guessing as to what the after-life holds and makes you question and want more. Either way, you do not get the answer and are left to sit in front of your television, starring wide-eyed, because you are shocked at the gore and disturbing visuals you had seen previously. Laugier swi tches from one disturbing scene to the next. This thriller will

A significant number of people have faulted the healthcare plan on various grounds. Some of the prominent critics of Obama’s health policy proposition were members of the Republican Party. This is well described by O’Connor, Sabato, and Yanus (166). However, there are also those who have lauded the plan.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on President Barack Obama’s Healthcare Reforms specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More View about the healthcare policy It is important to note that healthcare is one of the basic human needs in the world and specifically in the United States of America. However, a significant number of American citizens do not have access to better healthcare and health insurance policy. It is approximated that over 45 million Americans lack medic al cover and about 100 million have no sufficient insurance for long term or chronic illnesses. These statistics are discussed by both McKenna and Feingold (180). These numbers are alarming; hence, the government needs to take some measures to ensure that all citizens have access to sufficient medical services. According to McKenna and Feingold (180) the United States the world’s leader in medical research and training; as such, the citizens of the United States should have access to the best and sufficient medical coverage as compared to citizens in other nations. It is ironical to see other nations like Canada, Great Britain, France and Germany provide better healthcare to their citizens at low cost yet their medical research and education are ranked below that of the United States. Therefore, the United States of America needs a national health insurance. The private sector is mostly profit-oriented and the players in the sector will always ensure their profit margins are as large as they can make them. Therefore, living the healthcare to the private sector will lock out low income earners from accessing better and high quality healthcare. National health insurance will ensure that all American citizens, irrespective of economic class one belongs to, have access to better healthcare services. It is unfair for the law to grant all citizens the right to better healthcare services yet the state players do not ensure it by providing easy access to health insurance and medical cover. Without state involvement, the right to health may just be on paper.Advertising Looking for essay on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Even though it may be viewed as an element of socialism, it is crucial for the government of the United States of America to play a significant role on the issues of health insurance and medical cover. It is only this way that low income earners can also access better hea lthcare services. This is because the government is not profit oriented; it acts for the interest of all American citizens irrespective of their economic, social or political statuses. The private sector does not work for the interest of all. It only offers the best to those who are ready to give them high returns. Nonetheless, it is also noteworthy that full involvement of the government may jeopardize the health insurance in the private sector thereby interfering with profitability in the sector. The only workable modality is that both the government and the private sector should be involved in healthcare. This will ensure higher income earners who prefer private sector health services get the services they can afford and at the same time the low income earners are also able to get proper healthcare services. Obama’s recent healthcare reforms Obama’s healthcare reforms have been subject of debate for quite sometimes since he took over office in 2008. However, the hea lthcare reforms are a step in the right direction. The new reforms will ensure that non-elderly American citizens have access to inexpensive healthcare insurance. The reforms have established the provision of these services through a recipe of a newly formulated program similar to Medicare program and the existing health plans provided by the employers. The healthcare reforms will ensure that all American citizens access high quality healthcare services. The reforms provide that every individual legally living in the United States of America and is not covered by either health plans provided for by employers or Medicare can purchase healthcare coverage via Health Care for America.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on President Barack Obama’s Healthcare Reforms specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This implies that the government will ensure that all citizens and legal residents are not discriminated against by the cost of obtaining healthcare services. Under the reforms, the United States employers are required to provide their employees with health care coverage comparable to Health Care for American or alternatively pay employees a proper payroll-based tax in order to give support to the program of Health Care for America and assist the employees to purchase their own health coverage. This healthcare plan is very good even for the immigrants since the Congress had passed an anti-discrimination legislation embodied in the Civil Rights Act of the year 1964; this was also past in the Voting Rights Act of 195 (O’Connor, Sabato, and Yanus 135). This implies that irrespective of one’s economic status, it will still be possible for one to afford a better healthcare coverage. However, it remains a fact that President Obama’s healthcare reforms are expensive. This is one of the grounds on which they have been criticized. The modes of funding the reforms are likely to be burdens ome to many American citizens who work hard to earn their money. Hence, the Obama administration should carry on with the reforms but find alternative funding sources. In other words, the reforms are good, but they should not place selective burden on a section of citizens while favoring the other. Conclusion The healthcare services in the United States should not be left to the private sector. Doing this will deny low income class from accessing quality healthcare services. Therefore, both the government and the private sector should be involved. Again, it is important to state that President Obama’s healthcare reforms are a step in the right direction since they will make access to quality healthcare services possible for most American citizens irrespective of their economic, political and social statuses.Advertising Looking for essay on health medicine? How to Write a Classic English Literature Term Paper with Ease

How to Write a Classic English Literature Term Paper with Ease A term paper in the sphere of literature is usually written to present a certain view or interpretation. But that’s not the only goal. While creating a literary research, you also need to convince the readers that your theory is not a puff, but a valuable speculation that can contribute to a particular subject matter. But we doubt that you think about all these goals when you receive a task to produce a classic English literature term paper. The amount of text you need to generate as well as the near deadline fill up your mind and distract you from taking into account the details which can cost you a good mark. And you don’t want to do a considerable chunk of work and, then, because of the wrong format or weak arguments get downgraded, do you? But we are here to prevent such a case scenario – we have built up an exhaustive guide on classic English literature term paper writing in order for you to have all the important information in one place. Just skim our article and see it for yourself – we’ve included tips on data search, topic selection, structuring, outlining and style hints. These are the most significant subjects you need to look into before starting a term paper, so use our guide to do just that, and we’ll do our best to provide you with plain and precise information. The Art of Choosing a Perfect Topic for a Literature Term Paper Well, this is surely one of the hardest parts of writing any academic paper. However, selecting a topic for a literature term piece can be simplified a bit by the fact that almost everybody has a favorite author or book. It means that you already have a starting point which saves a great deal of time. So, you can take a fiction or nonfiction story that you have already read and know well, and make up your mind regarding the aspect you want to research. And while deciding on that one, we advise you to ask yourself these questions whenever you have a topic in mind: Do I actually like the topic? It is essential to select the subject that is interesting to you. Why? Because it will influence your enthusiasm and thoroughness – the more curious and challenged you will feel about getting to the bottom, the more profound your research will be. Is it original? You might want to choose a subject that nobody or at least not a lot of scholars have explored to have enough room for manoeuvre. Moreover, your professor would better read and consider something new which will add up to the positive impression. Is there enough material to research it? This questions may contradict our first point a bit, but if you end up with a completely new topic and there is no information that may help you, the term paper quest may be above your bend or take too much time. So, consider your priorities and don’t overestimate your abilities. Can I contribute to my field of studies? Determine whether your topic bears any value to the research of the literary work you focus on. It is very important because you need to be able to explain the significance of your term paper. Does it appeal to the audience? As your first concern should be the level of your interest in the topic, it is also important to consider whether it is readable and â€Å"entertaining† for the audience. Your supervisor is a simple human being with the same habits, reflections and emotions. So, if he/she gets engaged while reading your term paper, it will 100% positively impact your grade. These questions will assist you not only in topic selection, but also in polishing the final variant of the subject you want to examine. Treat this procedure critically and dig at every controversial or vague answer because if you don’t do it at this stage, it will backfire during actual writing. So, respond to the questions wisely. Primary and Secondary Sources: Search and Preparation Basics In an English literature term paper you are going to analyze some kind of text (e.g. novel, short story, article, biography, etc.) which is considered a primary source. Hence, all the other references that you will make in your writing will address secondary sources because they will contain secondhand information about your main topic. However, you may explore other concepts related to the literature work in focus, and, of course, there also may be primary sources. Whether there is or there is no need to separate your works cited list into 2 different parts, clear it out with your professor. In the meanwhile, we’ll tell you how to find the top information for a literature term paper: Literature handbooks: these are specialized guides that will provide you with field-related data (e.g. The Oxford Companion to English Literature, The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English, etc.); University library: there you will be able to find papers written by the professors of your department, and if you use their research findings in your term paper, it will be a great plus to the overall image of your work; Bibliographies: when you choose the topic and approve it with your supervisor, ask for the most important works in the selected subject matter – then, use the recommended sources, i.e. their bibliographies, to find relevant authors/articles; Online scientific search engines: it’s inappropriate to take unknown articles created by anonymous writers from the Internet, but it’s acceptable enough to find sources in search engines designed for academic purposes (e.g. Google Scholar, JSTOR, EBSCO, etc.) After you find enough information for your term paper, it is necessary to process all the sources to gain maximum value from them. In order to do that in the best way possible, you may: Sort everything out according to the aspect they are related to; Read carefully through the important sources and skim less significant ones to save time; Compare all the writers’ statements with your own assumptions and make conclusions; Form new judgments after processing all the data and analyze how they have changed from your initial opinions. These steps will help you to review all the materials closely and not to lose any important details. So, use our instructions to handle the sources. How to Arrange the Structure of a Classic English Literature Term Paper After choosing the topic and working through the sources that you have, you need to think about planning your actual writing, and outlining is the best way to do it most effectively. But before we proceed to different drafting techniques, you need to know the typical structure of a literary term paper. We will stop on each part separately to cover all the details and give you as much significant information as possible. Title Page The first page of you writing work should be formatted according to the citation style you need to follow, and must contain your university name, department, class types, supervisor/professor, your name, paper title, submission date and winter/summer term. Table of Contents This part has to show the reader the internal structure of the paper – chapters, subchapters together with the relevant page numbers. Works cited and introduction should also be included while the title pager and table of contents are not enumerated. Introduction While in the essay you need to produce an introduction the size of a paragraph, in the term paper the introduction should be almost the size of an essay. There are many important elements that it should consist of: Topic explanation and problems it raises; The limits of your research (define the scope of your exploration); The value of the questions you will answer in your work; Methods used to analyze the information; Your strategy applied to respond to the questions; Planned targets; Etc. In short, you need to present a brief overview of everything you will write about in the term paper. The task is not easy, but pretty much doable if you dedicate enough time to its completion. Main Body This is exactly the place to include all your chapters and subchapters. Each of them will consist of a small introduction, main text and specific conclusion. But the main things to remember while dealing with the biggest part of your literature term paper are that you must answer all the questions that you posed in the intro, and prove your thesis statement. Conclusion Provide your readers with a concise summary of information that has come out of your answers and research. Don’t forget to discuss different applications of the results of your research (how your findings are useful for the field of study) as well as mention other perspectives for the further exploration. As for the works cited, make sure that you’ve taken into account all the formatting details while organizing the referencing list. 3 Best Outlining Techniques to Go for When You Need to Plan Your Writing Outlining is a draft of your future table of contents, and it is crucial for a quicker creation of your term paper. Without a step-by-step plan you will get distracted from the process because you will simply need to invent ideas for writing. But with an outline of any sort you will have a clear direction with hints that will assist you in dealing with topics that must be covered. So, there are 3 best outlining types that are most suitable for literature term papers, and they are: Temporal – you take notes about the beginning (introduction, first chapters, etc.), climax (the most significant part where you lay all the cards on the table) and end (finishing chapters and conclusion). Logical – take all the facts that you discovered during your research, analyze their causes and aftermaths. Rhetorical – you build a kind of mind map where your starting point is your topic (general subject). You divide it into smaller parts and draw connections between them, or do it vice versa. No matter which technique you will choose, make sure that you make notes as detailed as possible so that you won’t need to return to the sources just to understand what you’ve written. Additional Stylistic Tips to Polish a Term Paper in Literature When you have done all the preparations, there are no more excuses to postpone the writing process. Further on, the success of you writing assignment depends purely on you, and we have done everything possible to show you the right way and tune you in the proper mood. In the end, we would like to give you the stylistic tips that will be really helpful in refining your term paper. Here you go! Avoid being sarcastic or ironic because besides the fact that it can be inappropriate, it will add no value to your research. Make sure your sentences are of proper length – this one is quite hard to determine, but the main criteria are that the sentences must be not too long and not too short. Read them out loud and if you lose the thread of sense while reading them, divide the long sentences/constructions. Create one paragraph for one thought – don’t try to discuss many statements in one piece because it will be hard to perceive. Don’t stuff your writing with specialized terms or foreign lexemes just to look smarter; firstly, you can use them in the wrong sense, secondly, your aim is to lay out the material in an understandable manner, and those terms will not serve you well in this. Stay away from the informal language, colloquial phrases or contractions – this is an academic style, so don’t forget about it. Use present tense to express your thoughts, talk about the research and state of affairs; minimize the past tense in your writing. Don’t leave the titles of next chapters at the bottom of the previous pages – write them on new pages. We hope that our pieces of advice, hints and suggestions will help you score the grade that you hope for. We wish you luck and patience to dedicate enough hours for this writing assignment. International Marketing paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

International Marketing paper - Essay Example It can also be viewed as a mechanism for optimising economic use of scarce resources such as forests, which are threatened by paper manufacture. As an example, all of Europe now uses 240 volt 50 Hz AC mains grids and GSM mobile phones, and measures lengths in metres. The United Kingdom has officially accepted metres for business purposes but feet and inches are still widely used by the general public. The existence of a published standard does not necessarily imply that it is useful or correct. Just because an item is stamped with a standard number does not, by itself, indicate that the item is fit for any particular use. The people who use the item or service (engineers, trade unions, etc) or specify it (building codes, government, industry, etc) have the responsibility to consider the available standards, specify the correct one, enforce compliance, and use the item correctly. Validation of suitability is necessary. We define different ways of organising and controlling each of the different kinds of projects. A general assumption is that it's good to be different and require industry-specific or custom solutions to demonstrate that we are different. Companies usually adopt standardisation when catering to a huge global market with products equally acceptable to the various segments of the market. While in contrast, differentiated products are made when customers demand unique features or when a particular segment has specific demands. In the context of social criticism and social sciences, standardization often means the process of establishing standards of various kinds and improving efficiency to handle people, their interactions, cases, and so forth. Examples include formalization of judicial procedure in court, and establishing uniform criteria for diagnosing mental disease. Standardization in this sense is often discussed along with (or synonymously to) such large-scale social changes as modernization, bureaucratisation, homogenisation, and centralization of society. In the context of business information exchanges, standardization refers to the process of developing data exchange standards for specific business processes using specific syntaxes. These standards are usually developed in voluntary consensus standards bodies such as the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT), the World Wide Web Consortium W3C, and the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). Standardisation helps in ensuring that brand uniformity is strong in order to maintain the brand image and loyalty. Brand image increases the loyalty towards the brand when it is supported by the actual service that the consumer receives. Companies can trim down the production and marketing costs by standardising the various features of their products and strategies to market their products. Research shows that standardisation is just another of the many strategies to enter the international marketplace effectively. Standardisation is not always the best strategy and often for smaller companies when they need adapt to local cultures while exploiting their exclusive images to gain local market share. (Levitt, 2003, 91) It is evident that when a company pursue a cost leadership strategy,

Immigration to America after the Civil War Essay

Immigration to America after the Civil War - Essay Example Immigrations to the United States after the Civil War had many economic benefits and a few negative implications to the country. Labor was at the center of focus after the abolition of the slave trade. An aberration from the trend seen in 1860, the number of workers compared to the total population rose from 33% to 40%, this represented growth by a factor of 2.7 between 1870 and 1920 (Walton & Rockoff 319). This prompted need for labor that ended up facilitating migration of people to the United States. The lives of the people who worked as slaves were fully transformed since there was no more forced labor. On the other hand, the large-scale farmers had a difficult moment adjusting to the new system of operations. This led to failure of some and rising of small-scale producers, who took advantage of the labor boycott by the slaves. The deficit created in terms of labor attracted foreigners who came to America in large numbers. In addition, the situation was aggravated by other extern al factors as the Irish Potato Famine in Ireland. The rise in population because of immigration acted as a catalyst to the rise of the rapid industrialization experienced between 1877 and 1900. The number of immigrants rose to more than seven million during the period. This was accompanied by a tremendous increase in population from 49 million in 1880 to 76 million in 1900 (White 1). The immigrants occupied most parts of America except the southern parts that were fully occupied by American farmers and industrialists. Many industries came up while those affected by the war restructured prompting the demand for additional labor. New production processes were initiated and research was intensified in order to facilitate industrial development. By 1900, many industries stood tall in provision of quality goods and services. This enhanced competition and trade (White 1). Increasing population facilitated a change in the demand and supply dynamics. The increased population provided a broa d market for goods and services, a factor that made it possible to increase the supply. In order, to take care of the supply needs individuals and corporate emerged with solutions to handle the increased supply. There was need for shelter that facilitated initiation of housing projects, need for food that boosted agriculture, the need for clothing facilitated the revamping of cotton farming and establishments of ginneries among other establishments. This demand created high production that facilitated trade within the country as well as opened new frontiers of business especially in Europe (White 1). The immigration rate was a blessing in disguise, since some of the immigrants helped reconnect America with their mother countries hence facilitating knowledge sharing and trading activities. Surplus production increased tremendously. Immigrations to the United States triggered economic changes that were politically motivated. It is worth noting that during the Civil War, there was a gr eat rift between the people of the southern parts of United States and the federal government under Abraham Lincoln. The people of south had an ideological difference with the leadership of the federal government since they wanted to retain slave trade (Digital History 2). Immigration facilitated an anti-democratic movement that was meant to put restriction on voting rights. The movement

U.S. Social Identity Group and Business paper and presentation Essay

U.S. Social Identity Group and Business paper and presentation - Essay Example For them, stereotypes have been part of their culture since prehistoric days in which slavery was the norm. This paper explores some stereotypes held against Africa Americans and the effect they present on organizational behavior and productivity. Both Americans and other cultural subgroups in United States geographical areas hold stereotypes against African Americans. Largely, since White people were slave owners before the abolishment of slavery, they are the main culprits of such stereotypes. For instance, slaves were perceptibly happy and ignorant people who were ready to serve their masters. According to their White masters, they were lazy people who needed supervision from their masters in order to work productively. Of all minority groups in America, African Americans endure the worst forms of prejudice (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2010). They may fail to enjoy economic and social advantages such as lower employment rates and lower remuneration. Stereotypes affect organizational behavior and productivity in negative ways. The stereotype that African Americans require supervision to show efficiency in the workplace is misguided. It affects organizational behavior because some employees may endure victimization owing to generalization. The probable psychological effects of stereotypes on African Americans may reduce their ambition and honesty to feedback. Eventually, they may fail to demonstrate productivity because of morale issues and uncoordinated efforts at the workplace. Negative expectations and stereotypes have an unconstructive effect on performance levels (Bridges, 2008). For instance, if a stereotype advocates African Americans as less intelligent and with poor work ethic, then some Black employees who are naturally intelligent may fail to realize their work potential and become less productive. In addition, an organization may fail to employ African Americans in managerial or senior positions

The Cross Cultural Negotiation Variables

The Cross Cultural Negotiation Variables Weiss (1993) identified twelve variables in the negotiation process which will lead to understanding negotiating style better. Different groups view the purpose and process of negotiation differently. Negotiation may be seen as a conflict in which one side wins and another loses, as a competition to identify who is best or as a collaborative process to formulate some undertaking. The winner of a negotiation in some countries is the one who gains the most concessions, regardless of the value of the concessions. Every group chooses negotiators on the basis of a variety of factors. Negotiators may be selected on the basis of their previous experience, their status, knowledge of a particular subject, or personal attributes. Different groups stress different aspects of the negotiations. Some groups stress substantive issues directly related to the agreement while others stress relationships. Different groups have their own particular etiquette associated with the negotiation process and their adherence to protocol varies according to its perceived importance. Protocol factors that should be considered are gift giving, entertainment, dress codes, seating arrangements, numbers of negotiators, timing of breaks, and planned duration of the process of negotiations. Different groups communicate in different ways and are more comfortable with one or another form of communications. Some groups rely on verbal communications, others on nonverbal. Some groups rely on one method, others mixed. The more varied method of communications, the more complex is the communication context and the more care must be given to understanding the context. Different groups attempt to persuade others and are persuaded by the use of a variety of different types of arguments. Some rely on facts and logical arguments, others on tradition and the way things were done in the past, still others on intuition or emotion and others on the beliefs associated with a particular religion or philosophy. Individuals play different roles in different societies. In some groups, the individual is seen as very important and a particular individuals success or failure can depend on the outcome of the negotiation process. In other groups, individuals are subordinate to the home negotiating party and personal ambitions are contained. Trust is a necessity if groups are going to work together to their mutual benefit and all groups seek to establish trust with the other parties in the negotiation process. Negotiation involves a degree of risk because the final outcome is unknown when the negotiations begin. Different groups view uncertainty and risk as relatively desirable or undesirable. The value of time differs from one group to another. Some people view time as limited and something to be used wisely. Others view time as plentiful and always available, therefore they are more likely to expect negotiations to progress slowly and to be flexible about schedules. Decisions are made differently in different groups. They may be made by individuals or by the group as a whole. Some groups accept the decision of the majority of the group members. Other groups seek consensus among group members and will not make a decision until all member have agreed. In some cultures, written agreements are expected; in others verbal agreements or a handshake is accepted. In some cultures, agreements are detailed and set out as many points as possible. In others, broad general agreements are preferred with details to be worked out as they arise. In some cultures, agreements are expected to be legally binding, in others, there is little faith in legal contracts and much more emphasis is placed on a persons obligation to keep his or her word. Chinese Negotiation Style China is going to be used to demonstrate that culture affects negotiation style. From Tony (2006)s research, there are three main Chinese negotiation styles. The Chinese negotiation styles includes Maoist bureaucrat in learning, Confucian gentleman, and Sun Tzu-like strategist. The Chinese negotiator as a Maoist bureaucrat always follows governments plan when doing business. The negotiator combines business with politics, avoids taking initiatives, shuns responsibility, and fears criticism. The Chinese negotiator is smart and tough because he is trained by Chinese bureaucracy daily in which bargaining is an important element (Davidson, 1987: Frankenstein, 1988; Lieberthal and Oksenberg, 1986; Pye, 1982). Being a Confucian gentleman, the Chinese negotiator behaves refers to the mutual trust and benefit, looking for cooperation and win-win solutions for everyone to succeed. He behaves high value on trust and sincerity on his own part. He analyses contracting essentially as an ongoing relationship or problem-solving process instead of a one-off legal package (Deverage, 1986; Kindel, 1990, Seligman, 1990; Shenkar and Ronen, 1987). He associated business with guanxi, friendship, and trust. His negotiation strategy is characterized by cooperation, basically. As a Sun Tzu-like strategist, the Chinese negotiator think negotiation is a zero-sum game and the marketplace as a battlefield (Chiao, 1981; Chu, 1991; Mun, 1990; Pye, 1982). He sets out to win-lose you, and never stops bargaining. The Chinese negotiator is skilful, provided with a formidable many of Chinese stratagems from his ancestors. Sun Tzu-like strategist adopts apparently soft but essentially tough tactics in negations. His negotiation strategy is characterized by competition. Managerial implications Sending the right team to negotiate in China is extremely important, the status of the team members will directly affect the attitude of Chinese host organization toward your company. Your team leader should be a person with charismatic charm, a patient personality, credibility and sufficient authority to make a key decision. It is crucial importance to show the Chinese the political support and governmental backing behind your China missions when negotiating large industrial high-risk B2B projects in China. The Chinese government is an importance player in business networks (Kock 1995). When embarking on a china venture makes sure you know the real Chinese negotiators. Despite the large Chinese team with many participants, the real Chinese negotiators usually are absent from the negotiation room. By identifying and negotiating with the real Chinese negotiators, you may, as a Chinese proverb stated, Get twice the result with half the effort. The number 8 is adored (whereas the number 4 is disfavoured) in Chinese culture. So try to use design 8 numbered products for China as a metaphor to enunciate the importance of respecting and learning Chinese sociocultural traits. From the perspective of Confucianism, China is a familistic society in which it takes time to build trust between non-family members. The Chinese distrust fast talkers who want to make quick deals (Pye, 1982, p. 92). By being patient, tolerant, calm, persistent, and honest in dealing with the Chinese, you will eventually win the Chinese heart and trust.

Its Time to Regulate and Reform Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide :: Euthanasia Physician Assisted Suicide

It's Time to Regulate and Reform Euthanasia One of the landmark cases that involve euthanasia is that of Karen Ann Quinlan. Quinlan, a twenty-one year old New Jersey resident, overdosed on pills and alcohol in 1975. She was rushed to the hospital where her physical condition gradually deteriorated to a vegetative state. The doctors determined she had no chance of recovery. Before the coma Karen said that if anything ever happened that would leave her physically and mentally incompetent, without any chance of recovery, she would not want to be kept alive by "extraordinary medical procedures," notes Derek Humphry. Karen's parents sought religious counsel from their priest. They were told that the Catholic religion allows the removal of extraordinary care if the patient was in a terminal condition. Karen's parents requested she be removed from the respirator. The hospital denied their request. The Quinlans then directed their request to the court. The superior court denied their request. They took their request to the New Jersey Supreme court where the decision was reversed. Karen was removed from the respirator. To everyone's surprise, Karen began breathing on her own and lived another ten years (Humphry 107). The Quinlan case brought to the forefront patients' desire to die a proud, quiet death. It also brought to the forefront the complications caused by the advancement of medical technology ("Euthanasia"27). Euthanasia has been practiced in Eastern and Western culture since the beginning of civilization. The capability of medical technology to extend life (as demonstrated by the Quinlan case) has made the issue of euthanasia more complicated. Individuals should be allowed to "die with dignity" in the event of terminal illness if he or she wants it. Terminating a patient's life is much more merciful than allowing him or her to die a slow painful death from illness. Those who oppose legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide say that this could lead to involuntary killing of the aged and infirm. I agree that there may be danger of abuse and that the vulnerable need to be protected; therefore, I support passing legislation that monitors and regulates physician assisted suicide. The demand for legislation in support of legalized euthanasia for the terminally ill has been an issue since the beginning of the century.

Full Metal Jacket

Meaning and purpose can be defined depending on the reader and the author that is defining it. The meaning and purpose of any form of literature is the main point of the piece of work, why it was created and what the author wants the reader to understand or get from his or her work. As for the movie Full Metal Jacket, the director, Stanley Kubrick, wanted to have a combination of comedy as well as a sense of realization when it comes to a soldier becoming a marine and what it takes to be one.The characters throughout the movie each show a different way of nderstanding and dealing with the problems that they had to quickly overcome. Full Metal Jacket is a movie that shows the different roles and stages of the marines that were stationed in the Vietnam War. The first half of the movie had an entertaining way of showing the audience how they were trained and how they learned that they were indeed â€Å"born to kill†. The main purpose of the first part of the movie was to show the audience what the soldiers had to go through first in order to make it as a marine. It had to be a hard as well as somewhat brutal and life-changing experience n order for them to be ready to become the killing machines that they were forced to be. The changes that the characters have shown make the second half of the movie very different in terms of their attitudes, what each soldier viewed as right and wrong, as well as the events that take place throughout the movie. This part of Full Metal Jacket was geared more towards the actual Vietnam War and revealed the reasons as to why they had to become heartless in a way during their training.Throughout the course of the war, some of the soldiers slowly but surely slipped out f their sanity and become cold-hearted killers in order to survive themselves. Each marine in Full Metal Jacket had to be able to prove that they were worthy enough to take on certain obstacles in the first half of the movie, such as emotional and mental hazing. S tanley Kubrick made sure to incorporate as much of the hazing as possible within the first half of the movie in order to show the audience how much work each soldier had to put into the beginning of their Journey into becoming a marine. If they could not take control of the rate of hazing they received it would be seen as a eakness, therefore proving that they are not ready for the war. For example, Pyle who was a soldier that as overweight clumsy and slow-witted, could not take the stress and harassment that came with the training of becoming a marine and he could not endure the embarrassment that was thrown at him every time he did something wrong, which in turn made him decide to commit suicide as well as murder Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, the drill instructor who trains the recruits in order to turn them into marines.Gunnery Sergeant Hartman seemed to have caused ll of the anger and frustration that Pyle had to go through, therefore Pyle's actions proved to the audience and to the marines that were involved, that not everyone can make it as a marine and may end up losing their sanity over it. The whole point of allowing the audience to view this is to reinforce the level of maturity that would be required to fully understand the troubles that comes with being a marine. The first half of Full Metal Jacket mainly focuses on how much a person can take while preparing for war, being in war, and knowing how to act and react to certain issues and perceived throughout the movie. In The Green Berets, Sargent Peterson, a Special Forces sergeant, quickly realized that he needed to make sure that Hamchunk, a homeless Vietnamese child, was safe and well accounted for when their base was being attacked. This quick form of action shows the audience that he was well trained and knew exactly what to do and when to do it.Full Metal Jacket revealed other ways of bringing out a characters sense of maturity and therefore had a different aspect compared to that scene, and basicall y the entire movie of The Green Berets. Full Metal Jacket was meant to make the audience completely understand hy the soldiers had to go through training the way that they did. It all comes together once the audience sees firsthand what can happen when a soldier loses his focus or is not fully prepared for what may happen next. The series of events that happens during the second half of the movie could make or break anyone who may not be tough enough to endure all of the negativity. Full Metal Jacket is supposed to be an eye opener and should cause a sense of realization for the audience. In the scene where Doc Jay and Eight Ball, two very brave marines, were being attacked by a niper, Animal Mother, a tough marine, did everything he could think of doing in order to try and save his dying friends, even though he knew that there was no chance of their survival.Regardless, Animal Mother went out alone, against his direct orders, to try and find the sniper and kill her in retaliation. G ranted, he could not do it alone, he called the rest of the soldiers to try and track her down. Once they found her, they shot her, made her suffer in pain for a little bit and then killed her. In a normal world, doing these actions would seem horrific and Just not right, but due to heir previous training and sudden attack from this woman, the soldiers were forced to murder this woman and left her there. This type of action or retaliation enforces the moral or immorality that ties in within the movie. Murdering the sniper, especially her being a woman, opens up a more intriguing way of the audience socially analyzing the situation. Making the audience decide whether or not murdering her and allowing her to suffer was acceptable or hard to accept due to her being a woman. As for the soldiers, this decision was made easily and as the sniper as laying down suffering, the audience could easily see the reactions that each marine made, showing their different views on their daily lives.Eac h soldier had their own morals and values compared to other soldiers. Obviously, each soldier has his own personality which brings a different outlook on what it is that they have to do, and how they are supposed to do it. Each soldier must fulfill their mission, and do what they are instructed to do. In Full Metal Jacket, the soldiers seemed to have similar values, and seem to have been brought up or trained almost identically. Due o the first half of the movie where they had been trained to know and love their rifles and to be ready to shoot and kill whatever was not considered one of them..Every soldier knew what they had to do and they were all comfortable when it came to killing the enemy and possibly sacrificing themselves in the process. Unlike Full Metal Jacket, in the movie Platoon, Sometimes the soldiers take their main source of responsibility and manipulate it. For instance, some of the soldiers took a young girl from the village that they took over and tried to rape her in order to satisfy their ersonal needs, until Chris, the main character as well as the marine who decided to human being and should not be raped Just because of her unfortunate circumstances. This scene showed the audience how some soldiers will have the wrong mentality due to their current hectic lifestyles, while other soldiers know and remember their rights and wrongs from â€Å"back home† when it comes to doing things that they can personally control. Full Metal Jacket seemed to have been made for the audience to view and understand the troubles and obstacles that each soldier has to o through beginning from his training all the way through his actual fght in the war.The audience is supposed to learn and begin to understand how the soldiers are supposed to be trained in order for them to make it during the war, or in order to know what to do to help whoever is directly associated with the war. Stanley Kubrick wanted to open up the eyes of the â€Å"outside world† and allow people to realize what each marine has to go through and their purpose for becoming a marine. They are not always out and about trying to rape and murder every woman they encounter as well as taking over everything that they see. There is a process that each soldier must go through in order to make it where they need to be.Full Metal Jacket compared to Platoon and The Green Berets makes the audience see both sides of a soldiers' life whereas the other two movies only show the second half of the soldiers' life when he is already trained and in the battle field. The other two movies don't show how the soldiers came up to where they are now, it reveals only what they have already accomplished within themselves, and they already have their own views on life depending on the amount of negative series of events that they have encountered. Full Metal Jacket has more than one meaning, and more than one purpose.Stanley Kubrick wanted to make sure that the audience was able to inter pret and take back with them the struggles and the achievements of a marine. What it takes to become one and what it takes to remain one at all times during the hardships of being in a war. Due to that, the movie seemed as if it should have been two separate movies, which makes it unique, compared to The Green Berets and Platoon where each movie was based solely on the war. Although, all three movies showed the different kinds of ttitudes that evolved into a marine as they each evolved or became a different person whilst being a part of the war. Some characters showed emotion while some didn't show any emotion at all, displaying the different levels of maturity that each marine must have. Displaying the different emotions was meant to allow the audience to see the war in different aspects based on certain marines in the movies. Full Metal Jacket allowed the audience to watch the marines as they evolved from viewing things in different ways. Regardless, the movie was supposed to be a sense of realization and knowledge.

Understanding Javas Cannot Find Symbol Error Message

Understanding Java's Cannot Find Symbol Error Message When a Java program is being compiled, the compiler creates a list of all the identifiers in use. If it cant find what an identifier refers to (e.g., there is no declaration statement for a variable) it cannot complete the compilation. This is what the cannot find symbol error message is saying- the compiler  doesnt have enough information to piece together what the Java code is intended to execute. Possible Causes For the  Cannot Find Symbol Error Although the Java source code contains other things like keywords, comments, and operators, the Cannot Find Symbol error references the name of a specific package, interface, class, method or variable. The compiler needs to know what every identifier references. If it doesnt, the code is basically looking for something that the compiler doesnt yet comprehend. Some possible causes for the Cannot Find Symbol Java error include: Trying to use a variable without declaring it.Misspelling a class or method name.  Remember that  Java is case sensitive  and spelling errors are not  corrected for you. Also, underscores may or may not be necessary, so watch out for code that use them when they shouldnt be used or vice versa. The parameters used do not match a methods signature. The packaged class has not been referenced correctly using an import declaration.Identifiers  look  the same but are actually different. This problem can be hard to spot, but in this case, if the source files use UTF-8 encoding, you may be using some identifiers as if theyre identical but really theyre not because they simply appear to be spelled the same.Youre looking at the wrong source code. It may seem hard to believe that youre reading a different source code than the one producing the error, but its definitely possible, and especially for new Java programmers. Check file names and version histories carefully. You forgot a new, like this:  String s String();, which should be  String s new String(); Sometimes, the error arises from a combination of problems. Therefore, if you fix one thing, and the error persists, check for different problems still affecting your code. For example, its possible that you are trying to use an undeclared variable and when you fix it, the code still contains spelling errors. Example of a Cannot Find Symbol Java Error Lets use this code as an example: This code will cause a cannot find symbol error because the System.out class does not have a method called â€Å"prontln†: The two lines below the message will explain exactly what part of the code is confusing the compiler. Mistakes like capitalization mismatches are often flagged in a dedicated integrated development environment. Although you can write your Java code in any text editor, using IDEs and their associated linting tools reduces typos and mismatches. Common Java IDEs include Eclipse and NetBeans.

Perils of Human Obediance essays

Perils of Human Obediance essays From the time we are born the ideals of obedience is taught and instilled in us all. Authoritarian figures are established and rules, guidelines, and codes of ethics are instituted. Each person chooses how strictly to follow these terms by his or her own accord, knowing that they will suffer the repercussions and consequences for disobedience. Whether it is a parent spanking a child or an adult being fired from a job there is always a certain disciplinary actions for not following orders. Everybody is expected to obey authority at all costs, but what happens when following orders means defying ones own morals? In 1963 Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram set up and conducted an experiment to test this very questions limits. It was designed to Force participants to either violate their conscience by obeying the immoral demands of an authority figure or refuse those demands(Milgram 343). In it a teacher(Milgram 345) subject and a learner(Milgram 345) subject are used. The teacher is a clueless volunteer but the learner is a pre-informed actor. Learner subjects are strapped in a chair and to a fake electric shock generator. The teacher is instructed to teach word pair questions to the learner and administer an electric shock for each wrong answer, increasing the voltage with each wrong answer. Testing not the learners ability to respond, but the teachers obedience to authority when ordered to continue regardless of the pleas to stop by the learner. It brings up the definite human conflict of personal-morals versus following orders from a higher authority. The results were unexpected and shocki ng to even Milgram himself. An unbelievably high 25 of 40 teacher subjects complete the test to the end, administering the highest possible shock level to the learner subject many times(Milgram 347). This shocking behavior is a demonstration of human nature being prone to follow orders at all ...

CROSS CULTURAL MANAGEMENT - HR Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

CROSS CULTURAL MANAGEMENT - HR - Essay Example Communication problems arising owing to cultural diversity can damage the team relationships in a business organization. In the case study under consideration, the French company Lemma is facing such problems owing to the differences between its organizational culture and the cultural makeup of the Anglo-Saxon companies it has acquired. There exist distinct differences between the French and Anglo-Saxon cultural values. The organizational culture at Lemma had its basis in the French cultural and social values, which made it difficult for the company to face the global integration – local adaptation dilemma. As per the Hofstede cultural dimensions, France has a high Power Difference Index. This means that the French managers tend to be autocratic in their approach towards administration and business. They prefer a hierarchical form of organization, where the senior administrators and managers do retain a certain distance from their subordinates. The French tend to prefer a cent ralized form of administration and expect their subordinates to obediently endorse the decisions taken by them. French are collectivist in their business and social interactions. The teams tend to be closely integrated in their approach and composition and there exist strong bonds between the colleagues in an organization that are to a great extent determined by status and hierarchy. The managers tend to support and protect their subordinates in exchange for unquestioning loyalty. The companies operate like a large family that is usually hierarchical in its constitution. The French culture is an essentially feminine culture. Personal relationships and bonds stand above anything else. Team members prefer to be modest and caring in their approach and preference is given to arriving at mutually acceptable decisions through consensus, rather than through direct confrontation. France has a high Uncertainty Avoidance Index, meaning that the French managers have a high intolerance for unce rtainty and ambiguity and are uncomfortable with contrary opinions and ideas. Hall facilitates another set of cultural dimensions, which offer more insight into the French cultural values. According to Hall, the French culture is a High Context Culture. Much is taken for granted and people believe in instinctive and contextual understanding rather than resorting to detailed explanation. There exists a strong distinction between in-group and out-group. The bonds between team members are very strong and interpersonal relationships play a crucial role in career development. There is high preference for long term relationships and people are very flexible with time. These premises are supported by the theory of Dutch scholar Trompenaars, as per whom the French culture is affiliated to particularism with highly collectivist tendencies. The French tend to be specific in their approach to relationships, depending too much on custom and protocol. It is an ascription culture, where status is governed more by traditional norms and less by individual achievement. In that context, the term ‘Anglo-Saxon’ primarily refers to the cultural values and norms of the Lemma’s non-French employees, who are primarily North Americans. The cultural values of these employees are in sharp contrast to Lemma’s specifically French values. The ‘Anglo-Saxon’ cultural values lean in the favour of a low Power Distance Index in the sense that Lemma’s Anglo-Saxon employees and managers are not accepting

Strategic Audit for the Body Shop Research Paper

Strategic Audit for the Body Shop - Research Paper Example The company, from the very beginning, tried to present itself as the leader in corporate social responsibility. Throughout its history, the company fought against human right abuses, and abuse of animals and plants. Environment protection was an important part of the agenda of the company. As a result, the company gained a large number of environmental friendly customers in America and Europe, and this helped develop a standard image in Asia and Middle East too. The company always promoted five core values which are as follows. 1. Against animal testing The company claims that it will not purchase any ingredient that is tested on animals for cosmetics purposes. In addition, the company campaigns against cosmetics tests on animals. Instead of testing on animals, the company depends on human volunteer trials like skin patch tests. In 1986, the company joined the ‘Save the Whale Campaign’ along with Greenpeace. In 1990s, the company conducted a number of campaigns against animal testing. 2. Protecting the environment The company, throughout its history, has supported all activities aimed at environmental protection. In 2001, the Body Shop joined Greenpeace in the effort to raise awareness of the global warming. In addition, in its environmental policy, the company promoted the idea, ‘reduce, recycle, and reuse’. The company’s policy of recycling, and encouraging customers to refill their products by reusing bottles won the heart of many environment-friendly customers around the world. 3. Human rights Throughout its history, the company fought for human rights. To illustrate, in 2000, the company started ‘Make your Mark’ campaign with their 3,000,000 customers signed up. The program intends to address human rights issues, especially in neglected areas. Undoubtedly, the Body Shop gets a lot of publicity in the effort to promote human rights. An example of this company’s human rights efforts is the fight for the rights of Ogoni people in Nigeria that won the wrath of Nigerian government. 4. Support Community Trade Through this program, the company collects ingredients and accessories from small producers around the world, especially from underprivileged societies. The company ensures fair prices, and this money goes back to the society to improve their lives’ basic needs like water and education. Presently, the company has trades with more than 42 community trade suppliers in more than 26 nations around the globe. To illustrate, as stated i n The Body Shop International values Report (Living our values, 2009), its palm oil comes from Columbia, coconut oil from Samoa, timber from Russia, Peppermint oil from Norfolk, cocoa butter from Ghana, Soya oil from Brazil, beeswax from Africa, and Footsie Roller from India. However, one has to doubt if the step will help such communities become independent as they tend to be totally dependent on the company for survival. 5. Self-esteem Te Body Shop always advocated the promotion of self-esteem especially in women. According to the company, it is about respecting oneself, looking after body and soul, and being proud of what one is. In 1998, there came a publication named ‘The Body and Self Esteem’ that was meant to raise awareness on the issues of

Isle of wight ventnor Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Isle of wight ventnor - Essay Example In addition, the seabed forms a ridge rising to 15 meters of the surface that causes the sea to rush in between the ridge created and the Island. Due to this, there exists a narrow deep channel called the St Catherine’s Deep. The problem Study of the geotechnical situation in Ventnor indicates that the town has experienced landslides subject to ground movements. These landslides cause damage to property and interrupt the delivery of services mostly done through pipelines. The under-cliff of the Isle of Wight is 12 kilometers long. In 1988, the Department of Environment in Ventnor commissioned a study to come with ideas for dealing with the land instability problem. To understand the problems of stabilizing the town of Ventnor properly, it is important to consider; 1. The nature of the landslips 2. Study the strategies used to reduce negative impacts in the future and their applicability 3. Investigate the previous cases of instability It is very crucial to note that only some areas in the town of Ventnor experience landslips. In fact, various developed areas do not get affected even by main events. Consider the Bonchurch Old church which is over 1050 years old and still exists. Researchers tend to misinterpret the extent of the landslides since they include buildings and property that crumble due to poor foundations. Consequently, the problem appears great and non-manageable. (Griffiths, 2001). Location map The location of the town of Ventnor creates a problem in the stabilization of the area. The town faces a sea with various activities among them sea bed movements. Its open side facing the sea presents the problem of vulnerability due to lack of protection from sea tides and strong winds. Instability due to ground movements Ground movement continues to be a problem in the stabilizing of the town of Ventnor. The worst period occurred in 1961 where cliff falls and collapsed settlements were rampant following heavy autumn rainfall. Although the records da te as far back as 1781, it is not easy to get a clear picture of the problem of ground movements. 91% of the town has had minimal movement annually and short term major movements are attributed to long run movements. In the last 100 years, ground movement has become a challenge to the local community. This problem is independent of financial influence since it is a natural occurrence. The continued development of the area based on urbanization increases human traffic; thus, adds to the initial ground movement activity. Sir William 1997 argues that ground movements result from slope instability, ground compression and subsidence. Initially, the under cliff was a result of various phases of landslides due to climate and sea level influences. Landslides in Ventnor appear in the cretaceous rocks which consist of Gault clay overlain by big sandstones and chalk. The thin clay layers and the Gault clay determine the stability of the area. It is evident that the geotechnical design of the t own of Ventnor is itself a problem to the stability of the area. Landslides The images above show the occurrence of landslides which create a challenge in stabilizing the town. Mostly, landslides in Ventnor occur due to planes of weakness that come beneath impermeable clay surfaces. Water seeps through layers of sand leading to instability due to erosion. This image above represents the anatomy of the landslides. Landslides occur at the under-cliff of Ventnor located to the south of
